My Approach
My theoretical orientation is integrative and client-centered, drawing from cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), existential theory, expressive arts therapy, and narrative therapy. I believe clients are the experts in their own lives, and we work collaboratively to determine the approaches that best support their goals. I practice with cultural humility, recognizing that identity, culture, spirituality, and lived experience shape how people understand themselves and move through the world. My goal is to create a culturally responsive and affirming space where clients feel seen, respected, and understood.
Through narrative therapy, I help clients separate themselves from the problems they face, recognize their strengths, and re-author the stories they tell about themselves. This approach can be particularly meaningful for individuals navigating grief and loss, as it creates space to honor what has been lost while exploring how to carry that relationship, memory, or experience forward. Expressive arts therapy offers additional pathways for exploration and healing through writing, collage, movement, and other creative processes. These approaches can help clients access emotions, process grief, and discover new perspectives that may be difficult to reach through conversation alone.
Cognitive behavioral therapy provides practical tools for understanding the relationship between thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. Together, we identify patterns that may no longer be serving you and develop new ways of thinking and responding that support emotional well-being. Like physical exercise, these skills become stronger with practice and can help foster resilience, self-efficacy, and self-compassion.
Drawing from existential theory, I also invite clients to explore questions of meaning, purpose, identity, uncertainty, and loss. Grief often raises profound questions about who we are, how we make sense of suffering, and what gives life meaning. Whether navigating bereavement, a major life transition, or another significant loss, clients are encouraged to move at their own pace while reconnecting with what matters most to them.
Overall, my approach is strength-based, relational, and trauma-informed, emphasizing personal growth, authentic connection, and the belief that meaningful change is possible.
